With the Holiday Season drawing to an end and the last  days of 2015 winding down, a review of the recent Meet & Confer minutes has stimulated some provocative thoughts and a reminder of  the Charles Dickens  classic, "Scrooge."

Just like DOC's "org chart", there is a structural organization for ACA, both "downline" and "upline". ACA is actually under the umbrella of the Arizona Police Association, or APA.  Our membership in  APA provides us far more in the way of legal and legislative representation and resources. Because we made the decision to join APA from the very beginning of ACA, we have access to almost unlimited legal representation and we enjoy all the benefits the larger employee organizations have fought and won for all its members. We have a network that includes DPS, all the large city police departments, many county sheriff's office agencies, and others. We are over 15,000 members strong.

Due to a whole lot of issues with the current rotation policy that have been voiced to Director Ryan by many staff as well as administrators, Mr. Ryan has created a Rotation Review Committee. Although the director will not consider eliminating the rotation altogether, he has indicated that every other aspect of the rotation policy is subject to change.

Please take a moment to go over the 2014 legislative update from APA. It contains information valuable for any law enforcement officer in Arizona. 

The message in the aforementioned statement could never have been more evident than in a recent high level meeting with DOA leadership.  ACA President Anthony Spears, former President Glen Conlon and APA Executive Director Levi Bolton attended a meeting with the Governor's Chief of Staff Scott Smith.  Also in attendance from DOC Leadership were Director Charles Ryan, Deputy Director Jeff Hood, and Operations Chief Carson McWilliams. 

As the membership is well aware, the officers at the Department of Corrections are being subjected to serious safety concerns resulting in numerous officers being viciously attacked, injured, and abused without a blink from the AZ DOC's management.  Our research has revealed shocking and disturbing patterns...

There have been several cases of EEOC violations against male and female officers. It is important to know your rights and have a clear understanding as to the types of discrimination.

The ACA has listened carefully to your concerns regarding staff safety. When those concerns appeared to fall on deaf ears within the department, the ACA along with APA Executive Director Levi Bolton brought your concerns regarding staff safety and staff assaults to the attention of the Legislature and the Attorney General’s office. Now your concerns are the concerns of the Judicial Watch.
